General Information

COMMON NAMES: Geographic Wrasse, Black-spotted Tamarin; German Brauner Perljunker,; French Labre Géographique

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Marari (AT), ‘Aupā (AK)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Mauritius - Cooks; n. to s. Japan, s. to Lord Howe

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; S.Group. (RR, AT) Rare. PLUS:; Marine, near-shore, outer reef-slope

KEY FEATURES: To 25cm SL; sexes distinctly different (=sexually dimorphic), and TP-males are sex-reversed females. Slender (depth 3x in SL), snout sharp with one pair of protruding teeth on both jaws, tail rounded (in juv.) to slightly concave (in TP). IP-FEMALE brown and yellow-brown posteriorly; one large yellow-edged black spot on posterior of Dorsal and Anal fins; Pectorals yellow. TP-MALE brown with narrow irregular blue lines on head; blue submarginal line on Dorsal and Anal; blue hind-margin on Tail; and blue spots and fine lines on body scales and fins.
