General Information

COMMON NAMES: Great Flashlightfish, Lantern-eye, Splitfin Flashlightfish; German Grosser Laternenfisch; French Grand Poisson Lanterne

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Pura (MG AT MK), Otaota (MT)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Indonesia - Tuamotus; n. to s.Japan; s. to GBR

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; In passages, often near surface. PLUS: ; Marine, near-shore, Mouth of reef-passages

KEY FEATURES: Shallow water form to 9cm SL.(RM91) , deep water (200+m) form to 26cm SL.(RM91) Black, blunt face, large mouth, forked tail, with luminous organ under each eye. Hide during the day and hunt at night, often in shallower water on moonless nights. XXDiffers from other flashlight fish by having 2 Dorsal Fins and light rotates off-on.
