General Information

COMMON NAMES: Lyretail Hogfish; German Herzog-Schweinslippfisch; French Caudène, Vieille à Queue de Lyre, Labre Lyre

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE e.Africa - Tuamotus; n. to s.Japan; s. to New Caledonia

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; S.Group, rare. (RR) PLUS:; Marine, near-shore, outer reef-slope, below 30m

KEY FEATURES: To 22cm SL. JUVENILE with dramatic lunate tail; body anterior orange-brown, posterior white with brown spots; tail white with brown upper and lower margins; Dorsal Fin with large black anterior spot. ADULT similar with more extensive brown areas and brown margins on tail turning black.
