General Information

COMMON NAMES: Stareye Parrotfish, Bucktooth Parrotfish; German Oliven-Papageifisch; French Perroquet de Carolines

TRADITIONAL NAMES: ‘Aupā (MK), U‘u [TP] / U‘u Kura [IP] (MT), Koti (TS TW), Wūmoemoe? (PK)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE e.Africa - Pitcairn, Hawai‘i - tropical America; n. to s.Japan; s. to New Caledonia

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; S.Group. (RR) PLUS: Male specimen RR (Sims); Marine, near-shore

KEY FEATURES: To 30cm SL, TP-Male distinctive. Depth 2.5x in SL; separate teeth on outside of dental plate; tail straight with small upper and lower lobes. IP upperhalf mottled dark brown, w/wo grey patches, lowerhalf pale orange; Pectorals, Dorsal, Anal and Tail mainly dark. TP-MALE dull blue-green with pinkbar on body scales; face blue-green with pink bands radiating from eye (hence the name, Stareye Parrotfish).

SIMILAR SPECIES: Calotomus spp. have numerous teeth on outside of dental plate (vs without teeth on front of plate in all other parrotfishes).
