General Information

COMMON NAMES: Bar Jack, Blue Kingfish, Blue Trevally, Yellow-spotted Crevalle, Striped Jack; German Querstreifen-Makrele; French Carangue à Barres, Carangue Tachetée

TRADITIONAL NAMES: ‘Utuveu (MK MT), Tapa‘uru (AK), Pakeva (PL), Leileionga (TS), Reireionga (TW), Pava? Pakeva? (MH), Peva (PK); Other Polynesian - Pahuru (TAH), Aruru (TAH-L), Naenae (TUA), Paaihere Guturi (MVA), Pomata / Ukikina / Upoupo (MQA)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE e.Africa - Tuamotus, Hawai‘i; n. to s.Japan; s. to New Caledonia

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; PLUS: N.Group and S.Group. Common in lagoons, also off the reef.; Marine, near-shore

KEY FEATURES: To 70cm SL, depth ~2.2 in SL. Round face, scutes small. Silvery blue-green above, silver below; usually 5-6 broad grey bars; fins grey, ± yellow tinge. 1st Dorsal very small; 2nd Dorsal and Anal anteriorly elongate; tail with long narrow lobes. Breast (to Pelvics) and base of Pectoral without scales, separated by broad band of scales.
