General Information

COMMON NAMES: Black Jack, Black Trevally; German Schwarze Makrele; French Carangue Noir

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Ru‘i (RR MG AK PL), Rui (AT), Pipi Ru‘i < Ru‘i < Pa‘o Ru‘i < Ru‘i Urua (MK), Ru‘i / Ru‘i Pepe < Ru‘i < Ru‘i Paka < Ru‘i Pa‘o (MT), Luhi / Manini < Katonga < Matase (TS), Ruhi / Manini < Katonga < Matase (TW), Lui / Lui Laupuapua < Lui < Tawauli (PK); Other Polynesian - Ruhi (TAH), Umi (MQA)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE circumtropical, incl. e.Africa - Marquesas; n. to s.Japan; s. to New Caledonia

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; PLUS: Both Groups. Common in N.Group, occassional in S.Group. Outer slope below 50m. Spear, trolling & rod.; Marine, near-shore, reef-slope and seamounts, 10-350m

KEY FEATURES: To 90cm SL, depth 2.5 in SL. Distinctive flat or concave face with high forehead. Uniformly dull grey to black; small black spot on gill cover; scutes ~black; fins dark grey to black; Anal with white margin; tail black posteriorly and pale anteriorly. Breast completely scaled. GENUS FEATURES see Bluefin Trevally (Caranx melampygus).
