General Information

COMMON NAMES: Bigeye Trevally, Bigeye Kingfish; German Grossaugen-Makrele; French Carangue Vorace, Carangue aux Gros Yeux, Carangue Têtue

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Kokokiva / Kōmuri (RR), Nato (MG), Ruporupo < Rupo < Tapauru < Urua (AT), ‘Ōmiri (MT), Kōmuri (AK TW), Komuri (PL), Kōmuli (TS PK NS); Other Polynesian - Omuri (TAH), Komuri (TUA), Matanui (MQA)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE e.Africa - Tuamotus, Hawai‘i - tropical America; n. to s.Japan; s. to Norfolk

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; PLUS: Both Groups. Occassional in N.Group, rare in S.Group. Passages and outer slope.; Marine, near-shore

KEY FEATURES: To 80cm SL, depth 3-4 in SL. Long curving face. Silvery blue-green to grey above, silvery-white to yellowish below; small black spot on gill cover; strong scutes ± black. Fins grey, 2nd Dorsal lobe tip white; sometimes Anal and Tail tinged yellow. Juveniles with 4-7 broad cross bands. Breast completely scaled. GENUS FEATURES see Bluefin Trevally (Caranx melampygus).
