General Information

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE e.Africa - Tuamotus; n. to s.Japan; s. to Lord Howe

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; S.Group and N.Group. PLUS:; Marine, near-shore, lagoons and outer reef-slope

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Excellent. Common.

KEY FEATURES: To 60cm SL. Cylindrical and streamlined; head flat; lips thick; upper lip with numerous prominent papillae; lower lip with folded fringe; silvery grey, with faint narrow light and dark stripes; Pectoral joint has distinct small black spot; tail large, slightly forked. Fins silver-grey, except young Pectoral black.

GENERAL NOTE: Feed on filamentous algae and foraminifera on sandy bottoms. Have oil flesh with an excellent flavour. Ciguatoxic????
