General Information

COMMON NAMES: Longfin Halfbeak, Long-finned Garfish, Green Halfbeak, Ribbon Halfbeak; French Demi-bec allongé

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Miromiro (RR MG AT), Pāpā (MT), Ise Pā (TS TW), Ihe (MH), Ie Pā (PK)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean, to Cooks - ?

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; A fish of the open ocean, capable of guiding more than 20m clear of the water, and can taxi more than 50m. PLUS: ; Marine, pelagic

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Food

KEY FEATURES: Extremely elongate to 50cm, ribbonlike. Very long lower jaw, short upper jaw. Very large Pectoral fins, reaching halfway to ventrals. Tail deeply forked, elongated lower lobe. Pale blue above, silvery sides and below.

SIMILAR SPECIES: A very distinctive fish.
