General Information

COMMON NAMES: Pacific Longnose Parrotfish; German Pazifische Langnase; French Perroquet à Long Nez du Pacifique

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Ū (AT), Rei (PL), Lawi (PK); Other Polynesian - Ulafi (TOK, TUV, WAL-FUT), Uhu Rotea (TAH); COMMENT: MH JSB&CM as Rahi

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Indonesia - Tuamotus; n. to s.Japan; s. to New Caledonia

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; Usually in schools over sandy areas where they are camouflaged by their pale colour. Terminal males often on forereef slope to 40m. PLUS: ; Marine, near-shore, lagoons

KEY FEATURES: To 40cm, depth xxx. An elongate snout (hence the name Pacific Longnose Parrotfish); TP has 1-2 canines on upper dental plate; TP has rounded tail with lobes. INITIAL PHASE FEMALE pale grey with yellow tail-base and tail. TERMINAL MALE pale blue and green with orange on scale-edges and upper lip; fins and tail mainly pink with blue rims.
