COMMON NAMES: Dark-margined Flagtail, Spotted Flagtail, Orange-finned Flagtail; German Silber-Fahnenschwanz; French Poisson-pavillon à Bordures Noires

TRADITIONAL NAMES: A‘ore (RR PL), Raparapa < ‘Aputu (MG), ‘Aputu (AT MT AK), ‘Āputuputu < ‘Aputu < ‘Aputu Pai (MK), Ahole (TS), Ahore (TW), Ayole (PK); Other Polynesian - Patia (TAH), Ahore (TUA), Hoke / Hohoe (MQA); COMMENT: MH aore JSB&CM

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Sri Lanka - Ducie, Hawai‘i; n. to s.Japan; s. to Rapa

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; PLUS: Both Groups; reef flat and in lagoons; rod and net.; Marine, near-shore

KEY FEATURES: To 20cm SL.(RM91)

SIMILAR SPECIES: The Hawaiian Flagtail (Kuhlia sandvicensis] recorded by Bullivant and McCann in Manihiki may be been the Kuhlia marginata. The presence of the Hawaiian Flagtail in the Nothern Group needs to be verified by experts.

SYNONYMS: Dules marginatus [O]

TAXONOMY: ANIMALIA; CHORDATA; GNATHOSTOMATA (Jawed Vertebrates); PISCES; OSTEICHTHYES; Perciformes; Percoidei; Percoidea; KUHLIIDAE. COMMENT: SciName questioned J.E.Randall pers.comm. 3/2000 - needs taxonomic investigation.

Mauke: fieldspecimen+Photo, College, 3/2001, ID GMcC. Palmerston: reported (Preston95). Manihiki: 6 specimens #A781, 1 specimen #A558 as Kuhlia sandvicensis [=Hawaiian endemic] likely also this sp. GMcC (B&M74). Pukapuka: informant reports at NBSAP meeting, 2/2004.
