General Information

COMMON NAMES: Yellowlip Emperor, Yellowlip Snapper, Short-nosed Emperor; German Gelblippen-Strassenkehrer; French Bec de Cane à Lèvres Jaunes, Empereur Bec de Cane

TRADITIONAL NAMES: ‘Īroa (RR MG AK), Iroa (PL), Ngutūla (TS), Ngutūra (TW), Yīloa (PK); Other Polynesian - Oeo Utupoto (TAH), Oeo tiamu (TAH-L), Ninuki (TUA), Vipuake (MQA), Manukena (MVA)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE e.Africa - Tuamotus; n. to s.Japan; s. to New Caledonia

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; PLUS: N.Group, PL and AK.; Marine, near-shore

KEY FEATURES: To 60cm. Olive to greyish snapper with distinct angle in front of eyes in profile from side. Upper lip yellow or orange, and inside of mouth and tongue bright orange. Often a red spot at base of Pectoral Fin.
