General Information

COMMON NAMES: Squaretail Mullet, Diamond-scale Mullet, Squaretail Mullet, Yellow-tail Mullet; German Keilschwanz-Meeräsche; French Mulet Mopiro, Muge à Queue Tronquée

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Ka‘a ? (RR), Ka‘a (MG AK PL), Kākā < Kā < Kārārā (AT), Ka‘arārā (MK), Kaha (TS TW), Kawa / Tamayei < Kawakawa < Kawa (PK); Other Polynesian - Nape (TAH), Mopiro (TUA), Kaa (MVA)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE e.Africa - Tuamotus; n. to s.Japan; s. to s.GBR - New Caledonia

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; S.Group, uncommon, N.Group, very common. PLUS:; Marine, near-shore, lagoons, often around lagoon toilets

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Not eaten.

KEY FEATURES: To 50cm SL, depth 4.5 in SL. Mouth terminal, head flat, large scales, tail large and square. Silver-grey; upperside scales edged dark. YOUNG pectorals black, held high; Tail bright yellow. ADULT Pectorals upper dark, lower yellowish; Tail yellowish.
