General Information

COMMON NAMES: Schlegel's Lophotid Fish

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE w.Pacific - Cooks, Hawai‘i; n. to s.Japan; Atlantic (not Indian Ocean)

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; Inhabits deeper offshore waters. One was caught on a longline off RR in the 1960s. PLUS:; Marine, near-shore, deep, outer slope

KEY FEATURES: A nearly scaleless, ribbonlike fish to 150cm, with a high forehead bearing a crest with a long strong forward spine; the Dorsal Fin extends the length of the body. Tail and Anal fins are very small; Ventral fins absent. Silvery-blue above and whitish below, with a blue-black head; the fins are blood red.
