General Information

COMMON NAMES: Blackspot Snapper, Golden Snapper, Black-spot Snapper; German Schwarzflecken-Schnapper; French Vivaneau Gibelot, Lutjan à Tache Unique

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Morenga (MG), Tangau (AT MK), Tangau / Tangau < Tākiriva (MT), Mōrenga / Kiriva (AK), Takapeti (TS TW), Ngatala ID? (PK)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE e.Africa - Fr.Polynesia; n. to s.Japan; s. to New Caledonia

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; S.Group ?N.Group PLUS: H&H Raro lagoon; Marine, near-shore

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Food fish

KEY FEATURES: To 35cm SL. Upper body pale brown; sides whitish with 5-7 pale yellow stripes; and belly yellow. All fins (Dorsals, Pectorals, Pelvics, Anal and Tail) yellow, although Dorsal can be very pale. Black oval spot above Anal Fin origin and mainly below the lateral line.
