General Information

COMMON NAMES: Onespot Snapper, Onespot Seaperch; German Einfleck-Schnapper; French Vivaneau Eglefin, Perche à Tache Noire

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Tangau (RR), Morenga (MG), Tākiriva (AT), Kiriva (AK), Taiva (PL), Tāiva (TS TW), Tāiva / Ngatala < Tāiva (PK); Other Polynesian - Taivaiva (TAH), Tainifa (TAH-L), Tero / Tagifa (TUA), Poga Poga Tagata (MVA); COMMENT: MH JSB&CM 1974 as tuamotu

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE e.Africa - Tuamotus; n. to s.Japan; s. to New Caledonia

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; PLUS: N.Group + PL.; Marine, near-shore

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Food fish

KEY FEATURES: To 50cm SL. Silvery white with bright yellow fins (Dorsals, Pectorals, Pelvics, Anal and Tail), and it usually has a small oval black spot above the Anal Fin origin and mainly below the lateral line.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Blackspot Snapper (Lutjanus fulviflamma) has 5-7 yellow stripes on sides and dorsal fin is not bright yellow.
