General Information

COMMON NAMES: Slender Two-wing Flyingfish, Sailfin Flyingfish; French Exocet Voilier

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Māroro (MH)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE e.Africa - Marquesas, Hawai‘i (& Bay of Panama); n. to Japan; s. to Samoa - Cooks?

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; Known from MH only (B&M74).; Marine, pelagic

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Food

KEY FEATURES: A small flyingfish to 17cm SL. Blue-black above and silvery below. Anal Fin and Dorsal Fin origin opposite, and Pectoral Fins are short - reaching middle of Dorsal Fin base. Short Ventral fins scarcely reach origin of Anal fin. Dorsal Fin is black distally, and white towards the body. The lower jaw projects slightly and the jaws protude when mouth is open.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Separated from other Cook Islands flyingfishes by the short pectoral fins; short ventral fins; protrusible jaws; and by having a pectoral branch of the lateral line.
