TRADITIONAL NAMES: Ka‘uru Renga (RR), Pākevakeva (MG), Kauruuru < Kauru < ‘Uiono (AT), Ka‘uru Rengarenga (MT), Au‘uru Puaka (AK), Ka‘uru (PL), Kāhuluhulu (TS), Kāhuruhuru (TW), Kahuru Moana (MH), Te Ata-o-Luea [Y] / Katuli [B] (PK); Other Polynesian - Ahuru Haravai (TAH), Takire (TUA)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE e.Africa - Tuamotus, Hawai‘i; n. to s.Japan; s. to New Caledonia - Rapa

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; Over coral, rock and rubble bottoms in moats, lagoons and seaward-slope to 100m. Feeds on small fish probed from holes. PLUS: S.Group and N.Group. Outer reef-slope.; Marine, near-shore

KEY FEATURES: 50cm (20in) SL. A goatfish with long barbels and an elongated snout. Two colour morphs: one is typically grey with blue lines and spots and a yellow saddle; and the other is uniformly yellow.
