General Information

COMMON NAMES: Bridled Parrotfish, Fall Parrotfish, Red Parrotfish, Vermiculate Parrotfish; German Grünbürzel-Papageifisch; French Perroquet Feuille Morte

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Ū Kiva (AT), U‘u (MT), Vaiā / U‘u (AK), Pakati < Koti (PL), Koti (TS TW), Wū Uluulu-akau?? [M] (PK); Other Polynesian - Paati (TAH), Pahoro Uteute

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE e.Africa - Ducie; n. to s.Japan; s. to Lord Howe - Rapa

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; In lagoons and on forereef slopes. PLUS: Photo PL (Grange/Singleton); Marine, near-shore

KEY FEATURES: To 35cm SL. Lips cover most of dental plats and nose overshoots mouth; 0-2 canines on upper plate; IP tail truncate and TP tail double-emarginate with increasing lobes. INITIAL PHASE brown to red-brown; topside and head pale brown unmarked; midside scales dark centred, hindside 6 dark stripes; fins and tail red. TERMINAL PHASE MALE blue-green body and head, with pale band around hind-body and base of tail; cheeks or lower half of head pale pinkish-green.

SIMILAR SPECIES: IP very distinctive with the 6 dark hindward stripes. TP pale posterior band and cheeks distinctive.
