General Information

COMMON NAMES: Bullethead Parrotfish, Garnet-red Parrotfish, Burnt Parrotfish, Green Parrotfish, Daisy Parrotfish; German Kugelkopf-Papageifisch; French Perroquet Brûlè (M), Perroquet Grenat (F)

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Oma‘uri < Pa‘opa‘o < Pakati (RR), Pakati - ?presence (MG), Ū Kiva (AT), U‘u Kiva (MK), U‘u (MT), Vaiā / Pa‘opa‘o < Pākatikati < Pakati (AK), Pakati < Koti (PL), Koti (TS TW), Mānenga Tomore / Koti? (MH), Māmānenga (RK), Wū Kalōma [F] / Wū Yengayenga [M] (PK); Other Polynesian - Paati Paapaa Auahi / Pahoro Hohoni / Paati Aa / Pahoro Aa (TAH), Hou Ere Ere / Hou Ninamu (TAH-L), Pitika / Pakoti (TUA); COMMENT: One spot is Omauri, several spots is Pa‘opa‘o, blue adult is Pakati and does not grow to U‘u size (Thomas Kino, Titikaveka. 5/98GM)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE e.Africa - Ducie, Hawai‘i; n. to s.Japan; s. to NSW - Lord Howe - Rapa

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; Marine, near-shore, lagoons and reefs

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Favoured. Common.

KEY FEATURES: To 40cm, with the depth 2.5 into the length. Phases different colours, and the initial-phase individuals are all females. Initial-phase usually dark brown, and reddish around the mouth; ± 3-4 pairs of small white spots along sides, and ± a large black spot on the whitish tail-stem. The fish can rapidly remove and regenerate the white spots and black tail-spot. The terminal-phase males are green ± a large tan patch on the sides.
