General Information

COMMON NAMES: Almaco Jack, Greater Amberjack; German Kleine Bernsteinmakrele; French Seriole Limon

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Kōmuri (MG AT AK), Paru Vai‘ā (MT), Paru komuri (PL), Palu Kōmuli (TS PK), Paru Kōmuri (TW)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE e.Africa - Marquesas; n. to s.Japan; s. to New Zealand

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; S.Group - deep; N.Group - deep.; Marine, near-shore reef-slope and seamounts 10-250m

KEY FEATURES: To 70cmSL, depth ~4 in SL. Bluish-green above, ± amber midside stripe, white below; ± dark stripe or cap from upper lip to 1st dorsal; Tail and other fins dark, Pelvics white front-edge. Face straight; upper jawbone ends under eye; Pectoral shorter than head length; tail lunar-like; without scutes; grooves above and below tail base; Anal less than 70% base of 2nd Dorsal; without finlets.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Greater Amberjack (Seriola dumerili) has face rounded; extra bone on upper-posterior of upper jawbone; GR 20-24 (juvs.) becoming 11-19 (adults) [vs. 24-29 becoming 22-26]; in adults 2nd Dorsal lobe = Pectoral (vs. 1.5x Pectoral). Consult specialist books for more details.
