General Information

COMMON NAMES: Wandering Tattler; German Wanderwasserläufer

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Kuriri (RR MG AT MT AK PL TW MH RK), Kuriri / Ngōriri (MK), Kulili (TS), Kolili (PK NS)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE upland Alaska (breeding); e.Australia - Pacific - e.Central America

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native, Migrant, Non-breeder; Land

KEY FEATURES: A sandpiper with short yellowish legs, a long straight bill; dark grey above and pale to white below. It has aslight pale stripe over the eye. Holds its body hunched in a horizontal position as it jogs and darts along the waterline in seach of small invertebrates. Usually territorial and solitary. When disturbed usually flies in a low arc over the water calling "tu-tu-tu-tu-tu-tu". Breeding Plumage: the entire pale underside becomes covered in a filigree of narrow, dark-grey bars and stripes. The bands under the tail are wider and very conspicuous.
