General Information

COMMON NAMES: Dusky Jack, Banded Jack, Dark Jack, Whitetongue Jack, Cottonmouth Jack; French Carangue Langue Blanche

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Leileionge (PK); Other Polynesian - Paia (TAH)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE e.Africa - Marquesas, Hawai‘i; n. to Japan; s. to New Caledonia. s.e.Atlantic

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; S.Group rare; N.Group uncommon; Marine, near-shore (below 40m); 40-100m

KEY FEATURES: To 40cmSL, depth ~2 in SL. Dark silvery grey-brown, paler below; subadults with 6-9 broad dark bars. Mouth at steep angle; Tongue, mouth-roof and mouth-floor white, rest is blue-black. Arched section of Lateral Line subequal straight section with scutes; Pectoral long and curved; 1st Dorsal with membrane; 2nd Dorsal and Anal without finlets and only slightly higher anteriorly; tail forked.
