General Information

COMMON NAMES: Engel's Mullet; French Mulet oeil de Perdrix

TRADITIONAL NAMES: ‘Aua < Konako < Kanae> (RR), Kākā < Kā < Kārārā < Teu (AT), Ūava [ID?] (TS TW), Uvava / Konako (MH), Aua / Aliki < Aua (PK)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE e.Africa - Tuamotus; n. to s.Japan; s. to Tonga - Cooks

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; S.Group and N.Group. PLUS: Confused with smaller stages of C. crenilabis.; Marine, near-shore, lagoons over sandflats

KEY FEATURES: To 15cm. Small; blunt snout; round body; additional eyelid covers part of pupil and extends <1x pupilØ behind eye; Lateral Row scales 32-35.. Silvery grey above, silver below, without any distinctive spots or stripes. Fins grey.

SIMILAR SPECIES: See Striped Mullet (Mugil cephalus).
