General Information

COMMON NAMES: Leopard Seal, Sea-Leopard

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Antarctica - nearby islands, winter vagrant to s.Aust - NZ - s.Africa

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native, Vagrant, Non-breeder; Marine

KEY FEATURES: Adults to 3.5m and around 350kg. A seal without external ears and with rearward pointing hind-flippers. It has a small head and a long neck. Topside dark grey with light and dark spots, underside silver with black spots; distinct line of demarcation. Lives and breeds in Antartica and sub-Antarctic islands. Moves northward during southern winter somtime reaching s.Australia and mainland NZ. The one which reached Rarotonga in the 1960s is the only tropical record.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Crabeater has smaller head, lacks line of demarcation along sides, lacks spots but often has scars. Cheek teeth are definitive: Weddell Seal 1-2-cusped, Leopard Seal 3-cusped, and Crabeater Seal 4-5-cusped.
