General Information

COMMON NAMES: Long-flange Millipede

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Veri Tinito (RR), Veri Tinitō (MG), Veli Tinitō (PK)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE probably Indonesia - Australia; EXOTIC EXOTIC circumtropical, including Indonesia - Marquesas, Hawai‘i

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, Naturalised; S.Group - widespread uncommon; Land, lowlands; leaf-litter

KEY FEATURES: Flat millipede to 2cm. Body dark brown to black in adults. MIDBODY (segments 8-9) lateral flanges (=paranata) sharp posteriorly. MALE gonopod on 7th segment, long and slender, reaching posterior legs of 5th.

GENERAL NOTE: Important animals in breaking down dead plant material. They break it up into smaller parts so that there is more surface area for bacteria and microfungi to digest and recycle the chemicals.
