General Information

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Southeast Polynesia (Mangaia - Australs - Tahiti)

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native, Endemic of se.Polynesia; S.Group only (Mangaia & Ma‘uke only - rare); Land

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: ; Nationally endangered - seriously.

KEY FEATURES: White shell with thick lip.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Partula assimilis has a dark apex, and only inhabits inland valleys on Rarotonga.

SIGNIFICANCE NOTES -
BIODIVERSITY: Nationally endangered - seriously.. Comment: On Mangaia live specimens 1870s (Garrett), dead shells only 1916 (Crampton), and one live specimen 2000 (McCormack). Ma‘uke live specimens 1916 only (Crampton).

Mangaia: specimens, c.1870s, A.Garrett with ID as Partula hyalina in Garrett 1881 p.396; dead shells, c.1916, "from ground near the cliffs bordering the lagoon-like valley", reported by Crampton (1916) as Partula hyalina; specimen+photo, northern makatea on Nephrolepis fern beside "old cross-makatea path", 10/2000, G.McCormack with ID as Partula hyalina. Ma‘uke: live specimens, c.1916, "in dense Pandanus a mile inland at an altitude of 150 feet", and dead shells in two forest locations, reported by Crampton (1916) with ID as Partula hyalina.
