General Information

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Cooks - Societies - Marquesas, also Polynesian Introduced

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; S.Group - widespread; N.Group ?; Land, coastal to mountains; on dead leaves in open areas and in forest

KEY FEATURES: The wide conical shell. SHELL ~5 whorls, final whorl ~50% Shell Length; umbilicus open; small parietal lamina; columella simple.

GENERAL NOTE: Cooke and Kondo (1960:251) give Tornatellides oblongus distribution as Cooks to Marquesas and indicate it was probably dispersed by the early Polynesians on food plants; along with Lamellidea oblonga.

Rarotonga: specimens, reported 1881 Garrett, as Tornatellina simplex, "plentiful in all parts of the group" and listed for Rarotonga, Mangaia, Atiu, & Aitutaki; 2 specimens, 1994, on Black Rock and one in dense forest, J.Craig, as Tornatellides oblongus; specimens, 2005/10, coastal scrublands and remnant forests, Fred Brook as Tornatellides oblongus, in report 2005/11. Mangaia: specimens, reported 1881 Garrett, as Tornatellina simplex, "plentiful in all parts of the group" and listed for Rarotonga, Mangaia, Atiu, & Aitutaki. Atiu: specimens, reported 1881 Garrett, as Tornatellina simplex, "plentiful in all parts of the group" and listed for Rarotonga, Mangaia, Atiu, & Aitutaki. Mitiaro: specimens, 1994, "widespread .... favouring crop plants", J.Craig, as Tornatellides oblongus. Aitutaki: specimens, reported 1881 Garrett, as Tornatellina simplex, "plentiful in all parts of the group" and listed for Rarotonga, Mangaia, Atiu, & Aitutaki.
