General Information

COMMON NAMES: Black Melting-Seacucumber

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; Marine, near-shore, reef-flat moat, under rocks

KEY FEATURES: A sea-cucumber to about 18cm, with large conical papillae along dorso-lateral and ventro-laterally edges, some with two daughter-papillae on their sides; there are small smaller papillae on the sides of the animal. The papillae have a retractile white tips. The tubefeet are arranged in three broad rows on the ventral surface. The mouth has a pallisade-like fringe and thick, creamy feeding-tentacles. The animal "melts" when held.

GENERAL NOTE: The "melting" action is caused by the rapid breakdown of the connective tissues in the body wall. This phenomenon is well known in the common Stichopus horrens.
