General Information

COMMON NAMES: Grey-thorax Fly

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: RANGE Samoa - Pitcairn; Hawai‘i.

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native, Endemic of Polynesia; S.Group - present; N.Group - present; Land

KEY FEATURES: Small fly, to 3mmBL. HEAD light brown with large red eyes. THORAX grey; topside with several long black bristles, and with several longitudinal rows of small black bristles. WINGS transparent, unmarked. ABDOMEN banded light and dark. LEGS brown.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Homoneura acrostichalis (de Meijere, 1915) is another widespread species (Micronesia - Samoa - ?) which has similar size, shape, hairs, etc. but it has thorax brown (vs. grey). Not presently recorded in the Cook Islands.
