General Information

COMMON NAMES: Diamondback-Moth Wasp

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Europe - India; EXOTIC EXOTIC Australia - NZ, Fiji - Tonga - Cooks

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, Naturalised; Land, parasite on garden pest

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Biocontrol - released 1974

KEY FEATURES: Small slender wasp to 6mmBL. HEAD black with large eyes, antennae 4mm. THORAX robust, black. WINGS both clear with solid triangular sector mid-anterior edge, veins brown. ABDOMEN anterior ascending, short, black; posterior long, cylindrical, light brown with some black rings or segments. LEGS yellowish to yellow-brown.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Differs from others in having rather cylindrical abdomen.

SIGNIFICANCE NOTES -
POSITIVE SIGNIFICANCE: Biocontrol - released 1974. Comments: Walker & Deitz 1979: Parasitic on Diamondback Moth (Plutella xylostella). Origin New Zealand, liberated Rarotonga 1974-1975. Known to be established (refer Valentine1975 in Walker & Deitz). (note: Walker & Deitz - unpublished report dated 1977, based on field work 1975).
