General Information

COMMON NAMES: Yellow-banded Hoverfly

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; Land, horticultural

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: ; Agric pest

KEY FEATURES: Slender hoverfly to 8mmBL. HEAD face uniformly pale; large red eyes; Male eyes meet topside; female with gap topside. THORAX black with cream sides and rear-end. WINGS transparent without blotches. ABDOMEN black with broad cream bands w/wo break mid-topside. LEGS pale brown, with some dark sections on hindlegs.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Yellow-banded Hoverfly (Allograpta amphotera) has face with dark median stripe (vs. uniformly pale). Slender Green Hoverfly (Melanostoma n.sp.QQRR) has face uniflormly glossy dark green.

NEGATIVE SIGNIFICANCE: Agric pest. Comments: Pest of Sweet Orange, Cucumber and Watermelon.

Vouchers:
Rarotonga: in Walker & Deitz 1979. Pukapuka: 1 specimen+photo, PK037, 2/2004, on edge of Uta reserve, ID tentative as Allograpta amphotera, although it differs from BPBM specimens and from photo of wing-preening, rear of abdomen of PK specimen is cream with very faint darker bands.
