General Information

COMMON NAMES: Sugarcane Derbid-Planthopper

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, Naturalised; S.Group - widespread; N.Group ?; Land, lowlands to Cloud Zone

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: ; Pest

KEY FEATURES: Very small, slender insect to 5mmTL. THORAX red with 3 white stipes. FOREWINGS narrow and expanded at outer end; translucent with extensive black blotches from base to tip.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Spotted Derbid-Planthopper (Paralyricen tephrias) has forewings with small dark spots (vs extensive dark blotches); is 8mm long incl. Folded wings (vs. 5mm). Onespot Derbid-Planthopper (Swezeyia lyricen) has forewings with brown stripe and one sub-terminal dark spot (vs. extensive dark blotches).
