TAXONOMY: ANIMALIA; ARTHROPODA; ATELOCERATA; HEXAPODA; INSECTA; PTERYGOTA; Coleoptera; BOSTRICHIDAE
IDENTIFICATION: Small black shiny beetle to 7 mm. Rectangular overall shape. Head hidden from above by the thorax shield which is shaped like a hood and has a flat front. Antennae as long as the thorax, last three segments expanded and black. Legs short and brownish. Wing cases form a cylinder longer than the abdomen with a distinct blunt end [at the rear]. A short spine is visible in the top corners of the rear of the wing cases. Under magnification Thorax covered in bumps at the front end. Front of head covered in ginger hairs. Eyes black. Wing cases have two projections each at the back end. Tiny dimples present over wing cases in parallel rows running anterior to posterior. Junction between thorax and wing cases distinctly visible and narrower.
GENERAL NOTE: larvae are wood borers in standing and fallen timber.
