General Information

COMMON NAMES: Domine, Deep-water Gempylid-Fish; French Escolier Maître

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Mangā Ru‘i (RR MG), Mangā Rui (AT), Mangā Rai (MK MT), Mangā (TS TW), Palu Kapoa? (PK); COMMENT: The head and mouth reminds one of the Black Jack (Ru‘i, Caranx lugubris).

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE s.Java; s.Japan; Samoa? - Cooks; Caribbean [few records]

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; Marine, near-shore, deepbottom

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Food (1+)

KEY FEATURES: A stocky fish (1:4 D:L) typically to 75cm SL. (max. 100cm). Uniformly silvery-grey, without markings on the fins. Dorsal with 16 spines, tallest centrally; 2nd Dorsal starts well before Anal, neither have separate finlets. Two lateral lines: both ending in the tail.
